As a spiritual director and life coach, and someone who has grappled with anxiety my entire life, I understand the challenges of navigating anxious thoughts. Spring, while a time of renewal, can also bring about a surge of anxiety for many. This month, I encourage you to prioritize March Mindfulness as a powerful tool to cultivate inner calm.
One of the most effective techniques I've found is the consistent practice of mindfulness using a short mantra. A simple word or phrase like "peace," "calm," "I am safe", or “Let it go” can anchor you to the present moment and gently guide your attention away from racing or repetitive thoughts. One that has been useful for myself the past couple of years is, “This thought means nothing”.Research has shown that mantra meditation can increase activity in the prefrontal cortex, the part of the brain responsible for higher-level thinking, emotional regulation, and decision-making. This increased activity can help individuals better manage anxious thoughts and emotions.
The key to harnessing the power of a mantra for anxiety management lies in consistency. Just like any muscle, the mind needs regular exercise. Whether it's a few minutes of deep breathing each morning or a brief meditation session before bed, cultivating a consistent practice will equip you with the tools to navigate anxious moments more effectively.
Be patient with yourself, and remember the two keys are just beginning and consistency. Let the topic of March Mindfulness be an inspiration to cultivate a calmer, more resilient mind.
With Love,
Kendra
