Regulating the Nervous System with Presence

Take a moment to look at this picture. What do you notice first, second, and third? Keep looking…see if you can stay here for another minute. As you allow yourself to be still and explore this photo, do you notice anything happening within your body? Within your emotions? How do you feel?

Now, you are invited to look at the mountains. What happens when you move your attention to the mountains? What do you notice about the mountains? What do you notice within you…your body, your emotions, sensations? How do you feel?

As you look at the mountains, does your gaze move to the community of homes? Does that bring up anything new for you in your thoughts, sensations, feelings?

Take 20 more seconds to focus on this picture. When you feel complete, take a moment to jot down notes about your experience or insights.

What you have just practiced is a version of the POB Practice of Present Moment Focused Awareness. Being able to bring yourself to the Present Moment helps to regulate our nervous system. Whenever you feel a bit off, anxious, worried or not grounded, I invite you to use your sight as a way to bring yourself into the present moment.
